Curriculum at St Thomas A Becket
At St Thomas a Becket Catholic Primary School our intention is that our curriculum extends opportunity, raises aspiration, opens children’s eyes to Jesus and God’s love and the world beyond their immediate environment, enabling them to live happy, healthy and productive lives and inspire them to become lifelong learners.
We aim to build resilience and encourage a positive growth mindset amongst our children as it is often through mistakes we learn the most.

Curriculum Vision
Our curriculum is focused on the development of children’s knowledge and skills across all primary subjects, ensuring pupils are ready for the next stage of their learning and lives. Families are key partners in this journey, and we value their ongoing support.
It is shaped by our unique identity as a ‘Catholic, Coastal and Diverse’ school. These themes are woven throughout learning, using local contexts and global perspectives to help children make meaningful connections.
We aim to develop both skills and memorable knowledge across an interlinked curriculum, enabling pupils to see themselves as Historians, Geographers, Scientists, Artists and Composers. Each term is themed to support this:
- Autumn – Discover (history focus)
- Spring – Explore (geography and science focus)
- Summer – Create (art, design and music focus)
We continue to refine our curriculum so children can confidently apply knowledge and skills across all subjects, particularly in reading, writing and maths.
Teaching and Learning
We are a reflective school, continually improving our teaching through research, including a focus on strengthening long-term memory.
Reading is central to our curriculum, enabling access to all subjects. We promote a strong reading culture from Reception onwards, with a focus on phonics, engaging reading environments and regular practice to build fluency and enjoyment.
In Reception, children learn through a balance of play-based and teacher-led activities, developing independence, cooperation and key early skills.
In maths, we follow a mastery approach, ensuring challenge and support for all learners.
We promote respect, diversity and inclusion, underpinned by Gospel Values and British Values. These guide behaviour, personal development and help pupils become responsible members of society.
Our curriculum is inclusive and adapted to meet individual needs, with targeted support to close learning gaps.
Assessment is ongoing and informs teaching. Through questioning, feedback and formal assessments, we track progress across all subjects and ensure every child is supported to succeed.

We believe our curriculum prepares our children well for their secondary education and imparts the life skills necessary to be confident, resilient, independent and active citizens who contribute positively to society in an ever changing world. We aim to provide our children with the cultural capital they need to understand, appreciate and respect difference in the world, its people and to lead successful lives. This capital is introduced through visits and events such as to our local churches, libraries, ‘Towner Art Gallery’, theater visits and Residential in Year 6 to ‘Fairthorne Manor’ and visitors through our ‘Money Management’ sessions, ‘Flat Stan’ (First Aid skills) and ‘One World Week’.
At St Thomas a Becket Catholic Primary School we continually work towards creating a curriculum that is ambitious and is designed to ensure all children are happy and enthusiastic life long learners.
