Requests for delayed admission for summer-born children
Children born between 1 April and 31 August do not reach compulsory school age until the September after their fifth birthday, at which point they would normally join Year 1. However, some parents may request their child be admitted out of their normal age group and start in Reception rather than Year 1 when they reach school age.
We call this delayed admission.
If you are considering delaying your child’s admission we would recommend discussing this with us before making before making this request to ESCC Admissions. This request would need to be in writing.
If you request delayed admission for your child you must:
- Apply for a school place for your child’s normal age group by 15 January 2026, through ESCC Admissions
- Complete a copy of the attached form form for delayed admission to Reception for summer born children (or see button below) and send it to admissions@eastsussex.gov.uk by 15 January
Free Education
Education provided by any maintained school for its registered pupils should be free of charge if it takes
place wholly or mainly during school hours, school hours being those hours when a school is actually in
session and not including the break in the middle of the day.
This means that neither the pupil nor his or her parents or guardian may be required to pay for, or to supply, any materials, books, instruments or other equipment for use in connection with education provided during school hours.
